MAX LAWRENCE 〰️
Naarm-based musician Max Lawrence (they/them) creates larger-than-life art pop, blending electronic grooves, orchestral textures and soaring vocals; capturing the expansive and detailing the intimate in their genre-fluid sound. Making music as a vehicle for emotional processing, they create expressive works that resonate deeply and question norms.
Their musical journey began as a teen, performing in a rock outfit with friends, later on creating their intimate solo project from their bedroom. This solo endeavour made Max feel more alive and connected to themselves, and they began to sculpt sonic worlds as a tool to find peace.
Max's musical style is adventurous and ranged, from the intimate chamber pop of their debut EP 'Chlorophyll' which saw ‘Icarus’ garner over 143,000 streams on Spotify; to the woozy, surreal R&B of 'Gasoline' and bombastic future 80's sounds of 'Speak In Tongues' and 'Confection'.
Lately, Lawrence's focus is on the ethereal, creating experimental electronica with an art pop sensibility that draws from their life and experiences, whilst also accessing something larger, juxtaposing reality with mythology.
Inspired by the avant-pop of Kate Bush, Björk, Sevdaliza, Eartheater, James Blake and Moses Sumney, Lawrence’s audiovisual landscapes blur the line between intimacy and fantasy, shaping worlds that are grounded in this one, yet extend upon it.
On the live performance front Max can be seen playing in an array of forms including captivating solo sets, expressive band sets at festivals such as Gaytimes and Illuminate The River accompanied by strings and saxophone as well as their collaboration with orchestral ensemble Forest Collective for three sold-out shows at Midsumma Festival in 2023. No matter the setup, audiences are enchanted by Max’s unique style of movement and song.
2023 will see Max Lawrence release much anticipated new music including the new single ‘All I Want’ set to be available for aural and visual pleasure on May 3
