DYAN TAI 〰️

Self-described as the Gaysian empress of Sydney, Dyan Tai (he/they) makes electronic hyperpop music fused with Beijing opera sounds and traditional Southeast Asian soundscapes.

Praised by Flume as "soundscapey and weird", and named one of the outstanding acts to watch at BigSound 2023 (NME), Dyan makes ‘sophisticated palette pop” (Rolling Stones).

From humble beginnings in Malaysia to carving a niche in the Sydney cabaret stages and now evolving into an electronic artist, the trilingual, Chinese-Australian artist is known for their captivating live shows that include powerful visuals and a mirror-coated keytar.

They recently premiered their first interdisciplinary headline show, “Permaisuri: The Gaysian Empress Rises” which included immersive projection animation by Juune Lee, classical Chinese flute by Chloe Chung and movement artist Risako.

As one of the promising artists awarded the prestigious Generations Music Fellowship (by Powerhouse Museum, Astral People, CreateNSW) and Performance Space’s Queer Development Program, Dyan’s music has received support from 88Rising Radio (SiriusXM, North America), local community radio (Triple J, FBI Radio, 4ZZZ) and editorial playlisting on Spotify and Apple Music.

Their latest single, Ni Hao, premiered on Pilerats and Triple J Home & Hosed. It was also selected as Track of the Day on Unearthed and their Top 5 tracks of the week. The music video premiered on Kalblut Magazine and will be playlisted on Pedestrian TV/9NOW for their Mardi Gras special.

Dyan was selected for the first APRA AMCOS Pride Songhubs curated by Troye Sivan, Lucas Keller (Milk & Honey) where they worked with artists such as Chela and Jamaica Moana; and included in Apple Music’s Queer Australia Pride playlist. They have opened for Big Wett, Electric Fields (Coastal Twist Festival) and performed at the Rina Sawayama’s official album listening party, Summer Camp Festival, Woodford Folk Festival and Gaytimes Festival.

Outside music, they are a presenter on FBI Radio and featured in the "Chinese Australian" episode of ABC’s award-winning "You Can't Ask That" (Season 6). They have been nominated for an Inner West Council Citizen of The Year Award with special recognition for their contribution to the QTPOC community. Their dedication to arts and community saw them featured on the cover of Sydney Star Observer (Aug 2023).

Dyan is well-loved as the founder of Worship Queer Collective which was recognised and cited as part of the global movement to unite Queer Asians and QTBIPOC communities alongside New York, LA, San Francisco and Toronto. Under Dyan’s mentorship, WorshipQC continues to champion the local Queer Asian Excellence movement with rave-reviewed community events. Their Melbourne Fringe Festival debut received a 5-star review from The Age and Don’t Cha Wish You Yum Cha x SydneyWorldPride 2023 was sold out across the Pride season.

Tai is the creative force behind WorshipQC’s Queer Mentorship program (Aug 2023); where they led a historic collaboration between Sydney’s QTBIPOC arts collectives: Big Thick Energy, Club Chrome, Bindi Bosses and Scary Strangers. Supported by the City of Sydney, the mentorship program provided workshops and 1:1 coaching for new and emerging Queer Asian and QTBIPOC creatives.
